An airbrushed illustration of a Pelton hydroelectric turbine seen here in fanciful interaction with water.

HCI Illustrations

This illustration appeared on the cover of the September 1994 issue of Hydro Review magazine. The image is a type of hydroelectric turbine called a Pelton turbine. What you are seeing is not really what happens in a pelton turbine; they are enclosed in a spiral-shaped housing that resembles certain mollusks. The whole design of a Pelton turbine is a marvel of precise engineering and beauty. They don't splash all over the place as this picture suggests; I was more fascinated by the poetry of the engineering. Getting these kinds of ideas approved by very literal-minded engineers required a good degree of diplomatic finesse.  This illustration was done in watercolor with an airbrush.
