This series of painting studies appeared as the year 2025 entered autumn. It grew out of an earlier exercise of dividing a postcard sized rectangle into three sections, a simple and enjoyable practice of composition. After some months of working within that limitation I found myself branching out, both with the number of divisions and the addition of color.
After many decades of limiting myself to a mostly subdued, tertiary palette, these go in for something brighter. The colors are chosen mostly by trusting impulse, also something new for me. I'm also employing both black and white as participating colors. There is also a deliberate attempt to allow the shapes to take turns, appearing to move either forward or to the background, depending on the viewer and the moment, allowing the work to be participatory and not so rigidly fixed.
These studies are small - 6 1/2 x 14 inches. I may see what happens by making some large versions on canvas. For now, these hold their own at a petit scale.
